A couple of nights after the main peak and finally the skies cleared to a reasonable degree. There are 22 Perseids in the clip including one 'Beta Perseid', in chronological order as usual. Even though it was the night after the peak (or 2 nights), rates were still very good, and for a time after midnight seemed to be in the region of 90 ZHR. Although the Geminids gets higher rates of meteors these days, the Perseids has a high rate over a longer period of time, so overall the Perseids is still the King of Meteor Showers!

A time-lapse clip of Pt Betsie Lighthouse under the 2008 Perseid Meteor Shower, with the moon setting, fog coming and going and a couple of freighters gliding by. Watch in HD if possible to see the meteors! More info on the light: Lighted for the first time at sunset on October 20, 1858. The light was automated in 1983 and the Fresnel lens replaced in 1996. Station populated with US Lightkeeping Service and US Coast Guard personnel through winter of 1997. Building offically vacated but, to this day, light remains an official aid to navigation, maintained by USCG crews. In unique partnership, Benzie County and the Friends of Point Betsie Lighthouse, Inc. start restoration efforts in 2001, and are awarded the deed to the property in June, 2004. Our joint mission: to provide historical, educational and environmental stewardship to Point Betsie. All exterior restoration completed in time for Point Betsie's Sesquicentennial in 2008. On the night of August 3 at 9:56 pm a Perseid meteor -- about 1 inch in diameter and moving at a speed of 134000 mph -- entered the atmosphere 70 miles above the town of Paint Rock, Ala. At such a tremendous velocity, the meteor cut a path some 65 miles long, finally burning up 56 miles above Macay Lake, just northeast of the town of Warrior. The meteor was about six times brighter than the planet Venus and would be classified as a fireball by meteor scientists. The Perseid radiant was low in the sky when the meteor appeared --only 9.5 degrees elevation. Therefore, this meteor could be considered an "Earth grazer" because of its long, shallow path, with an atmospheric entry angle of only 12 degrees. It's a very good start to the 2010 Perseid meteor shower, which will peak on the night of Aug. 12-13 between midnight and dawn. A blustery day in Lander, Wyoming pushed the clouds out of the sky setting the stage for perfect meteor shower viewing conditions. Three employees from NOLS, the National Outdoor Leadership School, spent the night camping in Red Canyon, Wyoming. Armed with three cameras and enough coffee to fuel the entire town of Lander, Kyle, Brian, and William pointed their lenses toward the western and southern sky to capture the Perseid Meteor Shower. This video is a compilation of what was captured. NOLS currently has 367 students in wilderness locations around the world. We are sure they all had amazing front row seats to this year's natural fireworks display. Lessons Learned: 1. Meteor Shower photography is a lot like fishing. You wait around for long periods of time and try to get lucky. 2. There could always be more coffee. 3. It's nice to have a spare camera around for "light-writing" to pass the time.

Rocky Mountain High" is a folk rock song written by John Denver and Mike Taylor about Colorado, and is one of the two official state songs of Colorado. Recorded by Denver, it went to number nine on the US Hot 100 in 1973. (The song also made #3 on the Easy Listening chart, and was played by some country music stations.) Denver told concert audiences in the mid-1970s that the song took him an unusually long nine months to write. "Rocky Mountain High" is primarily inspired by John Denver's move to Aspen, Colorado, United States three years earlier and his love for the state. This is the most famous of all meteor showers. It never fails to provide an impressive display and, due to its summertime appearance, it tends to provide the majority of meteors seen by non-astronomy enthusiasts. This meteor shower gets the name "Perseids" because it appears to radiate from the constellation Perseus. An observer in the Northern Hemisphere can start seeing Perseid meteors as early as July 23, when one meteor every hour or so could be visible. During the next three weeks, there is a slow build-up. It is possible to spot five Perseids per hour at the beginning of August and perhaps 15 per hour by August 10. The Perseids rapidly increase to a peak of 50-80 meteors per hour by the night of August 12/13 and then rapidly decline to about 10 per hour by August 15. The last night meteors are likely to be seen from this meteor shower is August 22, when an observer might see a Perseid every hour or so.
